You need a ticket to enter the Pantheon. Entry costs €5 for most adults since July 2023, rising to €7 from 1 July 2026. You have three options: book on the official portal before you go, buy at the door on the day, or get a third-party skip-the-line ticket. This guide explains exactly how each option works and when each one is the right choice.

How to Buy Official Pantheon Tickets

The official booking portal is museiitaliani.it, operated by the Italian Ministry of Culture. Tickets bought here cost exactly €5 (the base adult price) with no additional booking fee, making it the lowest-cost option.

Step by Step: Booking on museiitaliani.it

  1. Go to museiitaliani.it and click the English flag in the top right corner to switch to English.
  2. Register a free account with your name, email, and a password. If you already have an account, log in.
  3. Once logged, Click “Tickets.” search for “PANTHEON” and select the “Pantheon e Basilica di Santa Maria ad Martyres”
  4. Click on “Tickets” and select the category of ticket.
  5. Select your visit date and time slot from the calendar. 10 daily slots are available: 9 AM – 6:30 PM.
  6. Select the ticket type for each visitor in your group: full price, reduced (EU citizens 18-25), or free (under 18).
  7. Review your order in the shopping cart and confirm.
  8. Complete payment. Use Google Chrome if the payment page fails to load on other browsers. If your card is declined, switch the payment method to Nexi rather than the default international bank option.
  9. Your tickets arrive by email as QR codes. No printing is required. Screenshot them in case of poor signal on the day.
  10. On arrival, join the pre-booked ticket queue (not the on-site purchase queue) and scan your QR code at the gate.

Bring a photo ID matching the name on your booking. You may be asked to show it at the entrance.

When Does Pantheon Ticket Availability Open?

Tickets are available for the current month and the following calendar month. Availability for a new month typically opens mid-month. During peak season (April to October) the popular morning slots sell out quickly. Book 2 to 3 weeks in advance for spring and summer visits. In winter one week ahead is generally sufficient.

Can You Buy Pantheon Tickets at the Door?

Yes. The on-site ticket kiosk at Piazza della Rotonda sells tickets during all opening hours, last entry at 6:45 PM.

Door Tickets: Card Only

Important: On-site tickets are card only. Cash is not accepted at the door. The kiosk accepts Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, and in most cases American Express, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. If you are planning to buy at the door, make sure your card works before you arrive.

The on-site queue moves in two separate lines: one for card purchases and one for visitors who have pre-booked online. If you have already bought your ticket, skip the purchase queue entirely and join the pre-booked entry line directly.

Do You Need Timed Entry for the Pantheon?

Yes. Every ticket, whether bought online or at the door, is assigned to a time slot. You cannot enter earlier than your slot. There is no enforced exit time, so you are not asked to leave when your slot ends, unlike Galleria Borghese where the two-hour maximum is strictly enforced.

If you arrive late for your slot the ticket remains valid for the same calendar day, but you will need to re-join the entry queue and wait.

Are Pantheon Tickets Cash Only?

No, the opposite is true. On-site tickets are card only. Cash is not accepted at the door. This catches many visitors off guard because older guides written before 2023 described a cash-only system. The current system accepts all major debit and credit cards at the on-site kiosk.

How to Skip the Line at the Pantheon

The official site at museiitaliani.it has no skip-the-line product. A standard pre-booked ticket gives you priority over the on-site purchase queue, but you still queue in the pre-booked entry lane (typically 10 to 20 minutes). The only way to bypass the entry queue almost entirely is through a third-party fast-track ticket.

Third-party operators (GetYourGuide, Headout, Tiqets) sell Pantheon fast-track tickets from approximately €5 to €15 per adult. These use a dedicated entry allocation and a separate entrance point. Most include a digital audio guide. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your visit applies on most platforms.

When a fast-track ticket is worth the extra cost:

  • April to October peak season, particularly weekend mornings between 10 AM and 2 PM when the pre-booked queue alone can run 20 to 30 minutes
  • If your schedule is tight and a 20-minute wait risks affecting the rest of your day
  • If you want an audio guide included without managing a separate rental

When the official €5 ticket is fine:

  • November to March, when even peak hours are significantly quieter
  • Any weekday morning slot at 9 AM
  • If you are comfortable with a short wait and do not need an audio guide

Is It Worth Visiting the Pantheon?

Yes. The Pantheon is one of the few sites in Rome where the interior genuinely exceeds what you expect from the outside. The ticket price is the lowest of any major Rome attraction and the experience is unlike anything else in the city.

What Famous Person Is Buried in the Pantheon?

Raphael, one of the three great masters of the High Renaissance, is buried inside at his own request. He died in 1520 at the age of 37. His tomb is at ground level on the right side of the interior, marked by a plaque reading Ille hic est Raphael: “Here lies Raphael.” King Victor Emmanuel II and King Umberto I are also buried here.

Beyond the tombs, the building itself is the main event. The dome is 43 metres in diameter and 43 metres from floor to oculus: a perfect sphere that could fit exactly inside the structure. It is the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built and still the original Roman pour from the 2nd century AD. The 9-metre oculus at the top is the only light source. On clear days around midday the sunlight enters as a defined circular beam that moves visibly across the dome as the earth rotates. When it rains, water falls through the opening onto the original Roman marble floor and drains through the central drain, which still works exactly as designed 1,900 years later.

Forty-five minutes to one hour is the right amount of time inside..

Dress code reminder: The Pantheon is an active Catholic church. Shoulders must be covered and hats removed inside. Shorts of standard length are permitted (unlike the Vatican where no shorts are allowed). See our Pantheon Rome Guide for the full practical visit guide.

Under-18s and Rome residents enter free every day. For the complete guide to free entry including first Sunday dates, see our spoke post: Is the Pantheon Free in Rome?
